10 Minority Scholarships to Apply for This Academic Year
The college applications are in, you’ve completed the FAFSA, and you’ve applied for the NC Assist Loan. But, there’s still more you can do to get ready for college. Scholarships are a great way to get extra money for college, and there are scholarships available for everyone.
Scholarships exist for many minority groups: African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, LGBTQ, women, and more. Here are 10 to apply for this academic year.
1. Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award
Soroptimist, a global organization that provides women and girls access to education, offers the Live Your Dream Awards. Recipients have the potential to receive up to $16,000 to help offset tuition costs, purchase books, or find reliable childcare. Women who demonstrate financial need and who provide the primary financial support for themselves and their dependents are eligible.

2. Traub-Dicker Rainbow Scholarship
The Stonewall Community Foundation aims to strengthen the LGBTQ movement by making smart, values-driven investments in dynamic organizations, projects, and leaders. The Traub-Dicker Rainbow Scholarship was established by Peggy Traub and Phyllis Dicker to encourage and support lesbian women in their pursuit of higher education. The program provides one-year scholarships of $1,500 or $3,000 to those graduating high school or already enrolled in college.

3. Latin Americans Working for Achievement Scholarship Program
Latin Americans Working for Achievement (LAWA) provides scholarships based on academic achievement, financial need, and community service. The award amounts vary. This scholarship program is for high school seniors and undergraduate students.

4. Advocates for African Americans Carolinas Scholarship Fund
The Advocates for African Americans Carolinas Scholarship (formerly named The African American Network) is a Duke Energy employee resource group that aims to develop growth opportunities for African American employees at Duke Energy.
Scholarship applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be a graduating senior at a North or South Carolina high school. Applicants must attend a four-year college or university in North or South Carolina, and they must plan to major in engineering, computer science, the sciences, accounting, finance, or business administration.

5. Great Minds in STEM Scholarship Program
Great Minds in STEM™ is the gateway for Hispanics in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Scholarship applicants must be of Hispanic descent and/or must demonstrate significant leadership or service within the underserved community. Applicants must have an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 and must be pursuing a science, technology, engineering, or math degree.

6. MPOWER Women in STEM Scholarship
Student lender MPOWER Financing offers this annual scholarship to female international or DACA students in a STEM degree program. There are several prize options up to $6,000.

7. Point Foundation Scholarship
The Point Foundation is the nation’s largest scholarship-granting organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students of merit. Scholarship amounts vary. Applicants must work for the betterment of the LGBTQ community. Applicants must be enrolled full-time for the full academic year in a degree-granting undergraduate or graduate/doctoral program.

8. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship
The North Carolina Association of Educators Minority Affairs Commission established this scholarship in 1992. Applicants must be North Carolina residents enrolled in a public high school in their senior year. Criteria for selection include character, community involvement, and scholastic achievement (with a minimum 2.5 GPA).

9. American Indian College Fund
The American Indian College Fund provides scholarships to American Indian and Alaska Native college students. Applicants must be registered as an enrolled member of a federal- or state-recognized tribe; or a descendant of at least one grandparent or parent who is an enrolled tribal member. Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited tribal, public, or private (non-profit) college or university.

10. North Carolina Hispanic College Fund
The North Carolina Society of Hispanic Professionals established the North Carolina Hispanic College Fund (NCHCF) to benefit Hispanic students in North Carolina. The NCHCF awards annual scholarships worth between $500 and $3,000. Scholarship recipients must be of Hispanic/Latino background. They must enroll in a degree program at a community college or a two- or four-year college/university and be committed to public service and community development.
