Change Your Approach to Learning with Rep: April Query

April Query

Our regional representatives make up the friendly face of the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC).  They connect with North Carolina students through in-person Q & A sessions, seminars, and conventions. Each of the seven focuses on a different region of the state. For those who are in the 910-area code in southeastern North Carolina, including the cities of Fayetteville and Wilmington, you may have met Dr. April Query.

Who Is April?

April received her Doctor of Education degree in 2017 from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, but she’s been a Seahawk for a long time.  She graduated from UNCW (the first time) in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science degree.  April loved college so much, she just couldn’t stop there.  She went back the following year and earned her Master of Public Administration in Non-profit Management degree in 2006.

Soon the desire to help others go to college was calling, and April began working with the College Foundation of North Carolina in May of 2006.  She has served as a regional representative for CFNC in the 910 region ever since.

But, longing to wear the graduation cap one more time, April went back to UNCW in 2013 to earn her Ed.D. in Higher Education. (Note to seniors: you can achieve anything you set your mind to!)

College Expands Horizons

While the academics certainly motivated April, she knows that part of having a successful, well-rounded college experience is building relationships.  The bonds students make with each other can last a lifetime.  April says her favorite college memories revolve around the friends she made, and each degree gave her the opportunity to meet new people with different backgrounds and ideas.  “I hold these folks dear to my heart and credit UNCW with affording me the opportunities to expand my horizons and great circle of friends,” says April.

Transitioning to College

While high school didn’t prove extremely challenging for April, she needed to adjust her approach to learning once she entered college.  “By the second semester I was hit with the reality of how difficult some classes were, and the level of effort that I would need to put in was much higher than high school,” explains April.  She struggled for a couple of semesters and had to make some changes, such as getting additional help from professors and rethinking her schedule.  April learned to spread out the courses that she knew would be difficult instead of taking multiple ones in the same semester.  “My life has taught me how to push through during challenging times, and I was able to bring that perseverance with me to college.”

Making College a Reality for All

“Being able to assist the great families of North Carolina with career, college, financial aid, and financial literacy information is extremely rewarding,” says April.  “I love being able to provide all of this excellent information for free and helping to make college a reality for many of our students.”

Dr. April Query and all the regional representatives are here for North Carolina students and their families, and we’re proud to have them on our team!  If you’re a student, counselor, parent or administrator with questions about planning, applying or paying for college, all you have to do is reach out to find the answers you need.  Call CFNC at 866-866-CFNC or visit us online at CFNC.org.
