Transcript Process
Students and graduates of participating NC public high schools can use CFNC.org to send free official transcripts to NC institutions. See below for answers to frequently asked questions.
Final transcripts will be released to colleges on June 19, 2025.
- If you used CFNC to send your transcript earlier in the year, CFNC will automatically
send a copy of your final transcript to those same colleges. There is no need to request a
new one. - Check the App Hub to confirm that your final transcript is pending or to cancel
transcripts you don’t need sent (Check our FAQ for questions). - Many colleges take 2-3 weeks to process the transcripts, please be patient.
- Transcript delivery will pause on June 26th and will resume on July 7th.
Before Requesting
Yes, if you are enrolled at or graduated after 2013 from a participating North Carolina public high school, you can send your official high school transcript electronically to any of the 110 participating North Carolina colleges regardless of whether you applied using a CFNC.org application. Just go to the Application Hub to get started.
Yes, if you graduated after 2013 from a participating North Carolina public high school, you can send your free official high school transcript electronically to any of the 110 participating North Carolina colleges.
The CFNC transcript system is available for current students and graduates of NC public and public charter high schools. If you attend or graduated from a private high school in NC, you'll need to check on your school's web site to see the options they provide for sending your transcript.
No, CFNC and the NC Department of Public Instruction collaborate so that NC public high school students at participating high schools can send an unlimited number of free electronic high school transcripts to 110 NC colleges and universities. You can use this transcript system even if you did not use CFNC to submit your application.
There are two ways to send your electronic NC high school transcript to an NC college/university:
- When submitting an online admission application, you can use the checkbox on the submission page, or
- Directly from the Application Hub. When choosing this option, you'll verify some basic information and then select up to 5 colleges and applications to send your transcripts to at a time. There is no maximum, but you can only choose 5 at a time.
North Carolinians for Home Education (NCHE) has some helpful tips and a template for homeschool students who need to create a transcript to send to colleges: https://www.nche.com/helps/high-school/transcript/
The CFNC.org transcript system only pulls data from NC public and public charter schools.
When Requesting
Electronic transcripts are normally delivered to the requested college within one to two business days. Once received, colleges typically require an additional two to three weeks to process a transcript.
There could be several reasons that the transcript request has failed. The three most common are:
- the transcript system could not find a match based on the information given. Below are our tips for troubleshooting matching data.
- there was an error with the transcript file
- your transcript is not on file (ex: if you graduated prior to 2006 or if your high school does not participate in etranscripts)
The pieces of information used for the match are:
- First Name
- Last Name
- NC School Number
- Date of Birth
If the transcript request "fails" to match, we encourage you to take the following steps to troubleshoot.
Review your information in the request thoroughly. Remember that the information must match what is in school's system. Every detail impacts the match.
Here are some common reasons the information mismatches:
Name: Two last names may have a space, hyphen, or only one name is entered as "last name"
Suffix: sometimes the suffix is included, it may be written with periods, all caps, written out (like "Junior"), or not included
Special Characters: any hyphens, apostrophes, or other special characters must match
NC Student Number: Make sure you're using the correct number
Extra spaces after any information entered
If that does not resolve the issue, then reach out to your high school or school district to confirm how the information exists in PowerSchool/Infinite Campus or to request a transcript from them directly. CFNC does not have access to PowerSchool or Infinite Campus.
The only way to confirm how the information exists in PowerSchool/Infinite Campus is to contact either your (1) school or (2) school district. Those staff members have access to the necessary applications to confirm this information for you.
NC Student Numbers (formerly NC WISE numbers) are assigned to students in North Carolina public schools by the NC Department of Public Instruction. CFNC does not have an available database of NC Student Numbers, but you should be able to find it on your high school report card or lunch ID.
The NC Student Number is required to submit a transcript request through CFNC.org, so if you do not have access to it, you'll need to contact your high school or county school district to obtain it. Please note that if you graduated high school before 2007, you may have never been issued an NC Student Number and you'll need to work through your high school or district directly to request a transcript.
Make sure you have entered (and Saved) the following information in your profile at the top:
- First and Last name
- NC Student Number (formerly NCWISE Student ID)
- E-mail address
- Gender
- Date of birth
- High school where you are currently enrolled, or were enrolled at the time of graduation
Once the above section is complete and you click save, the transcript checkboxes will become active.
After Requesting
If you are:
- A currently enrolled high school student: the successful completion of your current high school transcript will mark the task as complete.
- Not a currently enrolled student: the successful completion of your final high school transcript will consider the task as complete.
Pending - Your transcript is waiting to be processed at the appropriate time. This would mainly apply to final transcript requests prior to graduation.
Requested - Your transcript request is ready to be processed and is in line behind other requests.
Complete - Your transcript has been sent to the college and they are able to download it. This does not mean they have received it. Please allow up to 3 weeks for them to receive and process the transcript.
Failed - An error was encountered during processing. You will need to correct the error and submit another request. (See the question above: I received an error when I tried to submit my transcript, what do I do?)
To view any previously submitted high school transcripts to an institution, you will need to start an application within the Application Hub. Once you have started an application, return to the Application Hub and beside the transcript task, select the “View Activity” button.
The "Cancel Request" button allows you to cancel any final electronic transcript requests that are in a Pending status. If you are not planning to attend this college or university and you no longer wish to have your electronic high school transcript sent to them, you may cancel the request and your final electronic transcript will not automatically be sent to the campus. If you cancel and need to send a final e-transcript at a later time, you may make another request from the Application Hub. You may cancel final pending requests up to 2 days within the date it is scheduled to be released at the end of the school year.
You can see if your transcript has been delivered to the campus from within the Application Hub. While viewing the activity for a particular online application, select the action button “View Activity” and look at the column “Downloaded by Campus”. A checked box indicates that the campus has exported the transcript from CFNC. An unchecked box indicates that the campus has not yet exported the transcript from CFN
Once delivered, admissions staff must manually review the information on the transcript before a decision can be made. This review process may take an additional two to three weeks to complete. Campuses request that applicants wait at least three weeks before contacting their offices to inquire about a transcript status. After that time, if a campus still does not show receipt of the transcript, please contact CFNC, toll free, at 866-866-CFNC (select option “1” for assistance). Please have the student’s name, NC Student Identification Number (formerly NC WISE), and the college(s) they have applied to in order to expedite the process.
Final Transcripts
Colleges do need to see the final transcript to show that students have graduated and met minimum admissions requirements. Final transcripts will be released to colleges at one time in late June.
- If you used CFNC to send your transcript earlier in the year, CFNC will automatically send a copy of your final transcript to those same colleges.
- Check the App Hub to confirm that your final transcript is pending or to cancel transcripts you don’t need sent (See how).
